Training Opportunities at Virginia Tech



Office of Emergency Management

Building Emergency Coordinator (BEC) Training Program:
BEC training enables you to effectively respond to disasters in or near your building. Topics include Personal and Family Preparedness, Fire Safety and Potential Dangers, Emergency Planning Considerations for Persons with Disabilities, Weather Emergencies and Building Engineering Considerations, and Safety and Security Considerations. Currently, BEC training is offered twice a year. Please contact OEM for training schedules.
Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT):
C-CERT training enables you to respond to disasters in your community. Classes include Terrorism, Disaster Psychology, Medical Operations, Fire Fighting, Search and Rescue, and more.
Incident Command System (ICS) 100 for Higher Education:
This course introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of ICS. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). This course uses the same objectives and content as other ICS courses with Higher Education examples and exercises.
Incident Command System (ICS) 200:
This course is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS.

Virginia Tech Police Department

Student Police Academy:
The VTPD Student's Police Academy is a free, hands-on experience, covering the various aspects of law enforcement. Topics include officer survival, threat assessment, traffic enforcement, canine operations, tactical operations, firearm safety, and more.
Faculty and Staff Police Academy:
Specially designed for Faculty and Staff, VTPD offers a hands-on experience covering the various aspects of law enforcement. Topics include officer survival, threat assessment, traffic enforcement, canine operations, tactical operations, firearm safety, and more.
Rape Aggression Defense (RAD):
The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. The RAD System is a comprehensive course for women. It addresses awareness, prevention, risk reduction, avoidance, and the basics of hands-on defense training.
Crime Prevention:
Includes topics like Alcohol and Drug Education and Alternatives, Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention, Personal Safety, Self Defense, and Residential and Workplace Safety. Contact VTPD to schedule a presentation for your class, office, or organization.

Environmental Health and Safety

Chemical, Biological, and Radiation Lab Safety:
EHS offers a variety of chemical, biological, and radiation lab safety training opportunities. Choose from Biological Safety, Blood borne Pathogens, Chemical Safety, Emergency Planning, Fire and Life Safety, Hazard Monitoring, Infection Control, Isotope Ordering, Laser Safety, Nanomaterials, and Radiation Safety.
Mechanical Lab and Machine Shop Safety:
EHS offers a variety of mechanical lab and machine shop safety training opportunities. Choose from Battery Recycling, Electrical Safety, Emergency Planning, Fire and Life Safety, Hazard Monitoring, Hearing Loss Prevention, Machine Shop Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, and Respiratory Protection.
Facility and Workplace Safety:
EHS offers a variety of facility and workplace safety training opportunities. Choose from Accident Investigation, Asbestos Operations and Maintenance, Confined Spaces, Electrical Safety, Emergency Planning, Ergonomics, Fall Protection, Fire and Life Safety, Hearing Loss Prevention, Indoor Air Quality, Lead Hazard Control, and Lockout/Tagout.
Farm Safety:
EHS offers a variety of farm safety training opportunities. Choose from Confined Spaces, Emergency Planning, Ergonomics, Fire and Life Safety, Hazard Monitoring, Hearing Loss Prevention, Heat Stress, Lockout/Tagout, Personal Protective Equipment, Respiratory Protection, and Safety and Health for Animal Handlers.
Construction Safety:
EHS offers a variety of construction safety training opportunities. Choose from Asbestos Operations and Maintenance, Contractor Safety, Electrical Safety, Excavation Safety, Fall Protection, Hearing Loss Prevention, Heat Stress, Lockout/Tagout, Personal Protective Equipment, and Respiratory Protection.
General Health and Safety:
EHS offers a variety of general health and safety training opportunities. Choose from Blood Borne Pathogens, Ergonomics, Fire and Life Safety, Hazard Monitoring, Hearing Loss Prevention, Occupational Health Assurance, Personal Protective Equipment, and Respiratory Protection.
Office Safety:
EHS offers a variety of office safety training opportunities. Choose from Accident Investigation, Battery Recycling, Chemical Safety, Confined Spaces, CPR, Electrical Safety, Emergency Planning, Ergonomics, Fire and Life Safety, Hearing Loss Prevention, and Indoor Air Quality.

Environmental Issues:
EHS offers a variety of environmental issues related training opportunities. Choose from Asbestos Operations and Maintenance, Contractor Safety, Emergency Planning, Environmental Compliance, Fire and Life Safety, Hazard Monitoring, Lead Hazard Control, and Waste Removal.

Virginia Tech Rescue Squad

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B):
This class is 154 hours and covers the basics about patient assessment and treatment of trauma, allergic reactions, diabetic emergencies, heat/cold emergencies, and cardiac emergencies.
Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training:
The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad offers CPR/AED/First Aid training for the Community and Workplace, the Professional Rescuer, Healthcare Workers, Sports Trainers, Lifeguards or any individual/employee with a duty to respond. Upon request, VT-Rescue offers recertification classes and can provide group training for your class, office, or organization.

Virginia Tech Threat Assessment Team

Threat Assessment Presentation:
Upon request, representatives of the VT Threat Assessment team can cover topics such as Overview of Workplace Violence, Threat Assessment Process, Identifying Persons of Concern, Managing and Deescalating Disruptive or Threatening Behavior, and How to Report Threatening Behavior.

Human Resources

Harassment Prevention and Complaint Handling for Faculty and Supervisors:
This workshop will review Virginia Tech´s policy on harassment and discrimination and focus on addressing these issues with respect for all involved. Participants will learn about responsibilities if someone discloses a harassment or sexual assault concern, resources available to dealing with difficult situations, and more.
Harassment Prevention for Nonsupervisors: Creating and Maintaining a Respectful Workplace:
This interactive workshop provides an overview of how harassment and discrimination issues are handled at Virginia Tech. Participants will hear about what protections are available to every member of the Virginia Tech community. The presenter will discuss different ways of dealing with thorny issues and provide information about campus resources to contact when help is needed.

Organizational and Professional Development (UOPD)

Managing Conflict:
Program participants will learn more about their own personal approach to handling conflict and better understand the consequences of conflict in a work setting. Participants will learn communication skills which can address conflict, and they will have the opportunity to participate in role playing to practice those skills.

Counseling Topics Concerning College Students:
Cook Counseling Center offers presentations upon request, covering the following topics: Stress Management, How to Refer the Distressed Student, Trauma Response After a Loss, Adjusting to Freshman Year, Orientation to CCC’s Services, How to Refer a Friend to CCC, Healthy Relationships, Body Image Issues, Eating Disorders, Referring International Students, How to Identify Students in Distress, Understanding Diversity, Depression in African Americans, Public Speaking, Communication and Listening Skills, Getting Along with Your Roommate, Exercise and Mental Health, Culture Shock, and Managing Emotions in a Healthy Way. Cook Counseling Center will also work with you to develop presentations on specific topics.
