It’s obvious: avoid them.
But that takes know-how, learning how to recognize risks and how to reduce them, learning what to do before, during, and after a disaster. That’s what "Ready" Hokies know.
"Be Hokie Ready" is a program designed to promote basic skills in emergency prevention, response, and recovery. The main resource is a collection of on-line guides from the Office of Emergency Management. Each guide emphasizes specific sorts of hazards as well as lifelong strategies for staying safe just about anywhere, whether on- or off-campus, in or out of class, at home or at work, or traveling from one to the other.
Everyone at Virginia Tech is encouraged to use these guides and to gain certification of emergency know-how.
For additional information on specific hazards, please see our comprehensive hazard guides.
The purpose of this training is to promote a culture of preparedness and disaster resilience at Virginia Tech. It will address ways for you to be personally prepared for an emergency as well as how you can help others and your community. The training should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Additionally, if you are an employee of the Commonwealth of Virginia, you are required to take the assessment piece associated with this module, as mandated by Governor's Executive Order 44 (2007). If you receive a passing score - that is, you correctly answer 11 of the 15 questions - then your attempt will be recorded and you will not have to take the assessment again. However, if you do not receive a passing score, it is your responsibility to retake the assessment until you do. Though you only have to pass the assessment once, it is suggested that you review the content featured in the module periodically.
